This is the first Volkswagen (Type 1) from 1938. Hitler in Nazi-Germany had ordered his engineers, lead by Ferdinand Porsche (of Porsche fame), to design a reliable and cheap car for the masses, hence the later name Volkswagen [peoples’ car]. Yet this first model never made it to the people — instead it was used during WWII as reliable and cheap transport for higher military ranks. Note the differences in panel shapes, and in particular the doors opening forward — the first production after the war saw quite a few changes.
